Exciting Discussion on Young Adult Research

A major new Canadian study on transitions from high school to the next phase in life is nearing completion. More than 100 ministry leaders attended a May 15 consultation in Burlington on the Young Adult Transition Research. The EFC’s Rick Hiemstra was one of the principal researchers and presenters of this study. Participants learned about today's era of delayed adulthood and how—in the absence of traditional markers like full-time career or marriage—young adults now sometimes seek to differentiate themselves from their parents by quietly abandoning their parents' religious beliefs. The research also showed that young adults are much more likely to keep their faith when non-parental adults help them make the transition beyond high school, for example when a mentor helps a young person get plugged into a new Christian community in the first month after they leave home.

This research was conducted by a partnership including the EFC, Power to Change–Students, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, The Muskoka Woods Leadership Studio, Youth For Christ and Truth Matters. YATR is a study for the whole Canadian church, and the research partnership is working cooperatively with Catholics, Mainline Protestants, Orthodox and Evangelicals. Faith Today editor Bill Fledderus was at the consultation, and later posted this reflection on his own transition in the years after high school.

Canada Summer Jobs Update

The federal government recently released the list of employers approved to receive a Canada Summer Jobs grant. A very small number of objecting groups who checked the box and added an alternate attestation or letter have been approved. If your organization has been approved for a CSJ grant even though the wording of the attestation was altered or a letter was included, please let the EFC know at feedback@TheEFC.ca.
