Summit On Ending Sexual Exploitation
Last week EFC director of public policy Julia Beazley, along with partners from Defend Dignity, attended the third annual CESE Summit in Houston, Texas. The summit, put on by the National Centre on Sexual Exploitation in Washington, DC, is an international gathering of leaders in the work to end all forms of sexual exploitation. Beazley reports that the multi-disciplinary nature of this event, including people from therapists to policy people to law enforcement to leaders from a variety of religions, is very encouraging.
Dalit Freedom Network
Several EFC staff members attended a Dalit Freedom Network Canada event last week in Ottawa. The Dalits are people born into families in the lowest rung of India’s rigid social system. Over 250 million men, women and children – that’s seven times the population of Canada – face extreme prejudice, abuse and oppression every day. Dalit Freedom Network is committed to helping to bring hope and empower the Dalit people by providing education, healthcare and vocational training.

In Ontario, P.E.I And Nova Scotia

In Case You Missed It
- Last week’s EFC videoclip and blog post point out that online pornography fuels exploitation and sexual violence. The EFC is calling Parliament to study the public health effects of internet porn and to consider age verification for porn sites, as is being considered in the U.K.
- The loss of religious freedom for any faith group means a loss of religious freedom for every other faith group, says a recent EFC letter to supporters about the upcoming Ktunaxa case at the Supreme Court.
- Doctors in Ontario must provide a referral for assisted death, even if it’s against their beliefs. Long-term care facilities and seniors’ residences may be required to allow euthanasia and assisted suicide on their premises. Ontarians can write about conscience protection to their MPP and Minister of Health using the EFC’s sample letter.
