Upcoming debate on bill to stop MAiD expansion

A bill that would stop MAiD for mental illness alone is expected to come up for its first hour of debate this Friday, Dec. 5. Please pray for Canadians struggling with mental illness and for MPs to support Bill C-218. Call or email your local MP today to ask them to support Bill C-218. See the EFC's one-page guide for who to call and what you might say.

Giving Tuesday

Today is Giving Tuesday, a global annual movement aimed at encouraging people to engage in acts of kindness and to support the causes they care about. You can participate by making a donation here in support of the EFC or consider making a tribute gift in appreciation of someone special in your life. We are grateful for you!

Secularizing Canada

How should Christians feel about living in a secular society? EFC senior ambassador Bruce Clemenger says a better form of secular government works together with all religious organizations without privileging one over the other. We should defend this freedom against a secularist agenda that could end government collaboration with religious institutions serving the public good. Read more in the Nov/Dec Faith Today.

Committee discussing removing protection for minority religious groups

A parliamentary committee is discussing a key protection for minority religious groups and whether it should be removed from the Criminal Code. The EFC has a summary about the defence and how to communicate with your MP about it. Your local MP could ask their colleagues on the Justice Committee to maintain this defence and to reject any proposal to remove it. Please pray that God would be honoured in our witness and pray for MPs as they consider these issues. See the EFC’s resource at TheEFC.ca/C-9.

New MAiD statistics

Health Canada has released new MAiD statistics for 2024. A total of 16,449 people had their lives ended by MAiD in 2024. This is almost 7% more MAiD deaths than in 2023, which is a slower rate of increase compared to the very steep increase year over year since 2016. Roughly 60% of people who died by MAiD identified the source of their suffering as emotional distress, anxiety, fear or existential suffering.

Laying foundations for disagreeing well

In a world marked by polarization, the Peace and Reconciliation Network is offering help. Its new consulting process Foundations of Disagreeing Well can help groups of 10 to 15 people engage with the dynamics of conflict, disagreement and relational distancing. Joel Zantingh of Guelph, Ont., one of the leaders of this World Evangelical Alliance initiative, explains more at FaithToday.ca.
